Hydration

Seeing as our bodies are made up of between 50-70% water it is important to get the balance right in terms of how much is enough. Water hydrates our cells and tissues and regulates our body temperature.

It very much depends on your individual constitution as to how much you need, a good indication is the colour of your urine, if it is darker then you may be dehydrated and need to increase the amount of water you consume.

The weather also dictates the amount that is required, in the hotter summer months Pitta types especially will require more water. Kapha types that are made up of the elements of earth and water may not need as much, too much can actually lead to water retention.

Regardless of your constitution it is advised to start each morning with a glass of room temperature water, ideally drunk out of a copper cup, the benefits being that copper can kill bacteria, aids digestion and strengthens immunity. Kapha and Vata individuals would benefit with hotter water, Pitta with lukewarm.  This will wash the GI tract and flush the kidneys.

Throughout the day it is advised to sip opposed to gulp room temperature water and teas (especially in the winter months) Cold water can disturb your digestion. Water is best avoided during meals as it can dilute the digestive juices, it is best to leave half an hour before/after meal times.

Especially at this time of year do be mindful of drinking enough water to maintain your energy levels.
