As we move into autumn, it’s easy to feel a little scattered, much like the leaves carried by the wind. In Ayurveda, like increases like, so as the seasons change, we can bring a little more balance into our daily lives by choosing foods that are warm, nourishing and gently spiced.
As the weather turns cooler, drier and more changeable, a comforting bowl of porridge is one of my favourite ways to begin the day.
Breakfast has always been my favourite meal, and I think that’s largely down to my love of porridge. It’s what I reach for when I’m feeling a little under the weather, or simply unsure of what to cook. We all have those days, don’t we?
I’ve always soaked my oats before cooking them, and over time, this simple preparation has become a little morning ritual of its own.
I begin with half a cup of oats, a few lightly crushed cardamom pods and a pinch of Himalayan rock salt. I cover everything with my milk of choice (oat milk is my favourite) and leave it to soak while I get ready for the day.
When I’m ready for breakfast, I gently bring the oats to a simmer, stirring occasionally. If they begin to look a little dry, I add a splash of warm water or extra milk. They usually take around five minutes to become soft and creamy.
Just before they’re ready, I stir through a spoonful of tahini. In Ayurvedic cooking, sesame is valued for its warming, grounding qualities, making it a lovely addition to a comforting autumn breakfast.
I allow the porridge to cool slightly before adding a little sweetness. Traditionally, Ayurvedic approaches may suggest different sweeteners according to your dosha: jaggery for Vata, maple syrup for Pitta and, in some traditions, honey for Kapha. These are general guidelines rather than hard and fast rules, so choose what feels right for you.
To finish, I scatter over a handful of seeds and nuts for a little crunch. I like to lightly toast a selection and keep them in jars in the kitchen, ready to sprinkle over porridge, soups or whatever else needs a little something extra. A small scoop of coconut yogurt (at room temperature) adds a little more creaminess if you wish.
And there you have it: a simple bowl of goodness, made with a little care and intention.
Enjoy this gentle morning ritual. Find a quiet space, perhaps somewhere the autumn sunshine can find you, and take a few moments to slow down. Put your phone aside, savour each spoonful and give yourself the space to feel grateful for another day.
Sometimes, the simplest things are the ones that nourish us most.
